Biden’s rabbi and I debate whether it’s time for the president to step aside

The first Jewish text that came to mind watching President Joe Biden’s painful performance in last night’s debate was Ecclesiastes, the scroll we read on Sukkot, which this year falls a few weeks before the most important election in our lifetimes. Its essential message is: There is a time for everything. The debate made clear that Biden’s time has passed. American Jews should help him find the way to honorably step aside in order to safeguard our democracy. A time to be silent and a time to speak , reads the ancient text. Last night was clearly not Biden’s time to speak, with his deeply hoarse voice and startling inability to stitch words into coherent sentences. A time to weep and a time to laugh . Only weeping for anyone who cares care about truth, as President Donald Trump confidently asserted an endless string of falsehoods. Over on Fox News, MAGA Republicans could barely contain their gleeful laughter. A time to sow and a time to reap. A time for war and a time for peace. A t...

Sigmund Freud understood the uncanny sensation we all felt watching the Trump-Biden debate

After last night’s presidential debate, many Americans now feel caught in a nightmare from which they cannot awake. (That many other Americans do not want to wake from this nightmare of course makes all this yet more nightmarish.) It is a nightmare that commentators started to wring their hands over during the debate, twisted more vigorously right after the debate and, as we discovered upon opening our papers and screens this morning, hands they have now mangled into bloody stumps. We know the reason for this reaction — the future of our imperfect but incomparable democracy was fought over by two elderly men, one ethically impaired and the other cognitively incompetent — just as we know what the commentaries we have yet to read will warn. Just glance at the headlines of the opinion pieces in this morning’s New York Times : “He Must Bow Out of the Race” (Thomas Friedman), “The Best President of My Adult Life Needs to Withdraw” (Paul Krugman), “Biden Can’t Go on Like This” (Frank Bruni)...

Polls show a small slip of Jewish voter from Biden to Trump. Could it impact the election?

Jewish Americans overwhelmingly favor and trust President Joe Biden over former President Donald Trump. But a pair of recent polls show a small slip of Jewish voters toward Trump compared to previous years, which may indicate that the president is struggling among both stalwart supporters of Israel and opponents of its military campaign in Gaza. In a contest as close as this presidential election is shaping up to be, even such small losses could make the difference on Election Day. One of the polls, released on Wednesday by the non-partisan Jewish Electoral Institute, of 800 Jewish American adults, showed Biden leading Trump 67% to 24% in a head-to-head matchup, and 64% to 26% when a third-party candidate was an option. The poll was conducted by GBAO Strategies between April 16 and 21, via text and web. It matched an online poll of 1,001 Jews by the American Jewish Committee which showed Biden with a 61-23 lead over Trump.  These numbers represent a modest but gradual shift fr...

How one artist turned the horrors of Oct. 7 into a bold series of paintings

Image
The colors hit first: glowing apricot, smoky mauve, and black interrupted by thick streaks of crimson. They are the colors of conflagration. But it’s the life-size figures that command attention – each one emerging from the impasto, and appearing desperate to spring off the canvas. The triptych is part of the figurative artist David Stern’s new series “Silent Running” about Oct. 7. Stern spent five months trying to pinpoint the core of that early autumn morning, when Hamas terrorists breached Israel’s border to murder, mutilate, and rape 1,200 people, mostly civilians and take 320 hostage, some of whom are still being held.  “The work is not a political reaction to the day. It is the theme itself that interested me, which goes a little further than the actual event. It’s about people being reduced to their creatureliness. When they were running they weren’t thinking about what they are or what they do. It was just about surviving,” Stern said. Standing in his Westchester studi...

In Jerusalem, a unique hotel offers respite for women who have experienced stillbirth

( JTA ) — JERUSALEM — Moriel Yamin was six months pregnant with her first child when Hamas terrorists overran the police station opposite her home in Sderot, killing 35 people. Yamin’s husband, a soldier in reserves, was called up. Like most residents of Sderot, Yamin was evacuated to a safer part of the country. In November, Yamin suffered excruciating contractions and was hospitalized for two weeks, before being given the all-clear. But during a routine checkup a month later, she was told the baby was in distress and that she needed to have an emergency caesarean section. Three days after Shira Chaya was born, the infant died. For three hours, Yamin sobbed and held her dead daughter in her arms, refusing to hand her over to medical personnel. “The doctor told me, ‘Death won’t make her more beautiful,’ but I kept thinking, ‘How can I let them take her from me?’” she recalled. Yamin was still reeling in mid-January when she and her husband took an unusual step, checking into a new ...

Both/And Thinking all Around: What are we Seeing in the Field

As Jewish leaders, every conversation we have these days relies on ‘both/and’ thinking — elu v’elu , meaning that multiple, conflicting stories can be true at the same time. We all need to practice elu v’elu even — especially — when it might feel challenging or impossible to see beyond our pain. Practicing elu v’elu was hard before October 7th. Now it can sometimes feel impossible, leading some Jews to wonder: What is my role within equity work?  To deepen our thinking, Leili talked to Jewish leaders of Color who live and breathe this work: Jackie Baldwin, Director of Anti Racism and Equity , Jewish Council on Urban Affairs ; kristen kendrick, VP of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Racial Justice, American Jewish World Service ; and Rabbi Sandra Lawson, Director of Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Reconstructing Judaism .  We talked through equal parts tears and laughter and sometimes both at once. In a time of intense polarization, when we are often faced with...

In the story of a Jewish teenager coming out and coming of age, a brilliantly understated film

Image
Marking his directorial debut, Jeremy Borison’s Unspoken is a lovely, delicately handled coming of age, coming out story centering on Noam (Charlie Korman), a young Modern Orthodox Jew. The film also touches on what happens when the memory of a beloved elder, now deceased, is tarnished and betrayed.  Noam enjoyed a deep bond with his late grandfather, both men boasting beautiful voices and a love of showtunes.  Shortly after sitting shiva, Noam and his mother (Jill Karenbrock) are clearing out Opa’s closet when Noam discovers a small keepsake box housing a picture of his grandfather, Heinrich, sitting closely alongside another man, the two luxuriating in a grassy German pasture before the war.   The small box also contains a one sentence love note to Heinrich and an engagement ring. But whenNoam asks his mom about Opa ’s life prior to the Holocaust, shegrabs the mementos out of his hand asserting none of it is his business and some things are better left un...

Online conference seeks role for Yiddish in the future of Holocaust studies

Since universities began offering Holocaust studies, very little of their research has focused on the role that the Yiddish language and culture played for many of the victims, survivors and other Ashkenazi Jews around the world. An upcoming online conference, Yiddish and the Holocaust: New Approaches, hopes to articulate a purposeful, innovative role for Yiddish in the future of Holocaust studies. The groundbreaking event, to include lectures in both English and Yiddish, will be held online June 23-26. Until now, scholars like Samuel Kassow, David Roskies, Laura Jockusch, Katarzyna Person and Mark Smith have published original research based on the abundant Yiddish language testimony that emanated from East European Jewish communal efforts, both during and after the Holocaust. But this is the first time that a major academic conference will focus exclusively on the importance of including  Yiddish as a crucial element of Holocaust research. The scholars featured at the confere...
